Wisconsin Convention planners receive many questions and comments on evaluation sheets received at the close of each convention.  Below are some of the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and Answers about how conventions are planned and conducted.

General

1.   Question.  What is the purpose of holding a State Convention?

Answer.  Each Convention is planned primarily for the enjoyment of square and round dancers, as well as to provide for the further development of the activity through an interchange of ideas, skills, and techniques among dancers, callers, and cuers.

Facilities

2.   Q.  How are convention sites selected?

      A.  Our State is divided into five areas (Central, Southeast, Southwest, West Central and Wolf River).  The convention site rotates among these five areas.  The General Chairmen research possible convention sites in their area and submit the site selection application to the Board of Directors for approval.

3.   Q.  What are the site requirements to hold a convention?

      A.  A minimum of seven dance halls of various sizes with danceable surfaces; space for Retail Vendors in or adjacent to one dance hall; a facility with ample seating for Special Events, Fashion Show and Inspirational Hour; additional rooms for Education Seminars, Hospitality, Program Office, secure equipment storage; and First Aid; space for Registration and Showcase Displays.

4.   Q.  Are there other considerations in selecting a site?

      A.  Yes.  Air conditioning, lodging, restaurants, food service, parking, camping facilities, site availability, and of course, cost, are all important considerations.

5.   Q.  Is there an ideal facility in Wisconsin for our Convention?

      A.  Since the Convention site rotates among the five areas, we do not hold the Convention at a single facility.  High schools, convention centers, and hotels are all potentially good sites.

Convention Programming

6.   Q.  How are callers/cuers/leaders selected for programming?

      A.  Callers/cuers/leaders who wish to be programmed at convention must be full members of WSDLCC or WRDLC, or members of a recognized square or round dance association as of January 1 of the convention year, and must register by March 1.  They must also complete a profile detailing their experience.  All callers/cuers/leaders determined eligible will be programmed fairly and without favoritism.

7.   Q.  Why do we have rounds in the square dance halls when there are halls designated for round dancing?

      A.  The convention is the Wisconsin Square and Round Dance Convention.  Many square dancers are also round dancers and enjoy dancing both squares and rounds.  A typical hour of dancing in the Mainstream and Plus halls includes 5 - 10 minute square dance tips and 1 - 10 minute set of round dances.  This schedule allows dancers who only square dance 50 minutes of squares and one 10-minute break per hour.

8.   Q.  Who determines dancing hours?

      A.  The Convention Policies recommend dancing hours, but they may be adjusted; the final decision is that of the General Chairmen.

Convention Planning Committees

9.   Q.  How are General Chairmen selected?

      A.  The area hosting the convention recommends to the Board of Directors, the name of an active participant in the square and/or round dance movement, for consideration and approval.  A balance of caller/cuer and dancer representatives is recommended and is accomplished by alternating the selection of a caller/cuer one year and a dancer the next.

10.  Q.  How are committee chairmen selected?

      A.  Each area selects two delegates for committee chairmen - one caller/cuer and one dancer.  The remainder of committee chairmanships comes from the host area.  Chairmanships are not intended to be a one-person job, but rather an “area” assignment for group participation and decisions on the assigned job, in order that the area as a whole will feel a part of convention planning.  Anyone interested in participating in convention planning is encouraged to contact the convention delegates or board member in their area.

11.  Q.  Who are the Board of Directors?

      A.  The General Chairmen, upon completion of their Convention, serve on the Board of Directors for five years.

12.  Q.  What are the responsibilities of the Board of Directors?

      A.  The Board is responsible for the Policies and Procedures for conducting a Convention; including approval of General Chairmen and convention sites.  The Board provides assistance to the planning committees and is responsible for providing insurance, maintaining equipment and assets, and disbursing funds to area organizations.

13.  Q.  How is the Convention publicized?

      A.  Each Convention has a Publicity Committee that prepares and carries out a publicity campaign.  Publicity includes National and Statewide publicity within the Square Dance community, as well as news releases to State and local newspapers, radio and television.  The Wisconsin Square & Round Dance Convention has an official website that provides online information about our conventions.  The website address is www.wisquaredanceconvention.org.

14.  Q.  What are the fees for Youth registering for convention?

      A.  Youth under age 18 and accompanied by a supervising adult pay one-half the adult fee.

15.  Q.  What is the convention dress code?

      A.  The convention defines “proper square dance attire” as follows:  Traditional square dance attire of long sleeved Western style shirt, with dress slacks or dress jeans, for the men and a square dance dress or square dance skirt/blouse ensemble, including prairie skirts, for women is considered preferred square dance attire.  However, in consideration of the more relaxed dress code now being promoted by some organizations and clubs, dress slacks or dress jeans, for men or women, and short sleeved dress shirts and blouses, will be considered appropriate.  In addition, State Law requires that shoes be worn in public buildings.
